About the event
TOYS 101: The Last Class is an immersive, theatrical class led by Jonathan Alexandratos, who plays a Non-Binary teacher on their last day of teaching at a conservative high school where they’ve been teaching for the last 10 years. Realizing that their career at the school has been one of regurgitating a limited curriculum and crushing student voices, they decide to open up about their Queerness for the first time, using their toys to do it. The hope is that, by sharing a piece of themself, students will want to share back. By registering for class, you become a student in a safe space where nothing is forced and everyone is allowed to be who they are. You get a syllabus, some readings, and fun writing prompts you’ll be able to share (if you want! No pressure.). It’s the last day of class, possibly the last day of your teacher’s career – let’s make it a good one.
TOYS 101: The Last Class premiered in NYC’s So-Fi Festival, and played to full houses and rave reviews. Theatre is Easy said, “This lovely, personal story is helped by writing sessions for the audience…This judgment-free show should not fail to inspire.” Jonathan has been a teacher at Queensborough Community College for the last seven years, so you’re not just getting to participate in a show, you’re getting a solid, fun, educational evening (with toys!), too!
You are encouraged to bring a toy or stuffed animal that might be meaningful for you to share your story.
